How old does your westie puppie need to be before you start giving them haircuts?

I must say that the sooner you start grooming, the better. I groom dogs for a living and there is nothing worse than a dog that has never had a haircut, bath or brushing since he was born. They bite, nip, whine and generally pitch a fit if they are not sure what is happening to them. I start out my pups at about 6 months in the shop environment and do a little clipping, get them used to the dryers, the noises and other dogs. It definately helps them to know we arent killing them, just making lots of strange noises! Puppies are wonderful and easy to handle if you start them early! Just brushing and bathing at home can be a great start to an easy groom. You dont want that groomer to tell you they wont groom your dog anymore because he is neurotic! The more they are socialized at a young age, the easy your life with him will be.

Try the library for a book called '; Learning to Speak Dog.'; Its a great read and very informative for those who have new dogs. I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in why dogs behave in certain ways and also how to read a dogs reaction and body language. You will be surprised!

Best wishes on that little sweetie! How old does your westie puppie need to be before you start giving them haircuts?
Actually,a WHWT is supposed to be hand-stripped,not ';cut';.How old does your westie puppie need to be before you start giving them haircuts?
any time after the get all there shots, after that..... even if the are not totally ready to get a hair cut... they can go to there groomer, and have a bath, nails, ears, brush out..... then the grooming goes from there.
how old is your dog first? my suggestion to you (as a professional dog groomer) is to first brush, bathe, clean/pluck ears, and clip toenails as soon as possible. the thing with puppies is that they have a different type of fur/hair for months after its born. eventually it changes to its adult fur and is easier to work with. but around 3-4 months will be fine, as long as you work with the dog (bathing, brushing, etc...) beforehand. but as a terrier, the dog may always be kind of against grooming, at least a little. some are good though, but theyre rare. hope this helps.
There is no age restriction on a dog's haircut. Just make sure that it is warm enough outside that your dog won't freeze.
When the hair is longer than you want it to be.
if he can go out for a walk he can go for a walk, but if he still doesnt go for a walk, dont.
